Event lift in Berlin-Schöneberg Gasometer

News

The EUREF-Campus Berlin promotes innovative solutions in energy, mobility and sustainability. The companies and research institutions here work on future urban development.

As a long-standing partner of the campus, Kone wishes to support this vision with sustainable lift solutions. The group has now installed an event lift in the gasometer.

With an office area of 28,000 square metres, the gasometer serves as a hub for the digitalisation of the German railway network. The first two floors serve as an event centre including the central forum along with the 15th floor as Gasometer Sky with event areas and panorama view over Berlin.

The MiniSpace event lift installed by Kone can be found in the centre of the building. It is fitted with seven 75-inch monitors and three 55-inch screens, supplemented by a modern sound system from Bose. “This enables the lift to create an immersive audio-visual experience," Kone explained. This is intended set the mood of the guests of Gasometer Sky and provide them with glimpses of the campus.

The event lift is specially adapted to the requirements of the gasometer. The integration into the building required special adjustments of the technology and design. Given a conveyance height of 65 m and speed of 0.7 m/s, the trip to the 15th floor takes about 95 seconds. The lift can transport up to 55 people simultaneously and is fitted with a 4-to-1 traction system.

The seven 13-mm steel ropes, which are redirected via a roller rack, are each 500 m long. The empty weight of the car is about 5,500 kg. The machine room is directly underneath the lift shaft.

Interactive travel experiences

The size and number of the monitors installed (which show a film about the EUREF-Campus Berlin and the gasometer during the trip) are a first in Germany. The audio-visual equipment of the lift is intended to support the overall concept of the gasometer as an event centre and provide visitors with information about the use and history of the campus.

The air-conditioned car is especially advantageous for events where many visitors are transported in a short time between the ground floor and Gasometer Sky.

Energy-efficient technology

The gasometer is intended to play a central role in future in the discussion and development of concepts for digitalisation and sustainability and for top-class events.

The event lift used energy-efficient components that minimised energy consumption and extended the service life, according to the lift company. “This is particularly evident in the gearless MX32 drive with hydraulic brake, which considerably boosts the braking efficiency while simultaneously reducing the environmental pollution.”
