New standard for inclined elevators

News

A European standard for the elevator sector has been revised: EN 81-22 (September 2021 edition) has now been published.

EN 81-22:2021 (Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts – Lifts for the transport of persons and goods - Part 22: Passenger and goods passenger lifts with inclined travel path) has been reissued to implement the requirements of the European Commission in EU mandate M/549. N.B.: No technical changes were made.

The other modifications involve the requirements of the mandate:
- The standards mentioned in the paper have been redated, which among other things directly affects product licensing and technical documentation
- There is a new Annex ZA referring to Lift Directive 2014/33/EU and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and their respective relevance for the main occupational health and safety requirements.

The old standard has a transition period, conflicting national standards will be withdrawn by September 2023 at the latest. Harmonisation under the 2014/33/EU Lift Directive 2014/33/EU is pending.
