Mayr: Commitment to climate protection

News

Mayr Antriebstechnik from Mauerstetten (Germany) has been climate neutral since 2020. For this purpose, the mechanical engineering company relies on a wide catalogue of measures.

The climate protection commitment consists of individual components: it starts with certification of the energy and environmental management according to DIN EN 16247-1 (energy) and DIN EN ISO 14001 (environment).

Since 2017, this has been complemented by electricity generation by the company’s own CHP plant and photovoltaic installations on the production and assembly halls. Every new hall roof surface has been fitted completely with photovoltaic systems since 2017. Overall, Mayr currently covers about eleven percent of its electricity consumption with its own electricity generation.

"In addition, we have been working on minimising our paper consumption for several years, the aim being to have a paperless office and rely on energy efficient machinery in production," explained managing director Günther Klingler. Other measures are already being planned or implemented in the field of e-mobility, energetic renovation of the existing buildings or in expanding the photovoltaic installations.

Energy saving potential in products too

When developing electromagnetic spring pressure brakes, Mayr Antriebstechnik optimises the magnetic flow through design and configuration to ensure the required magnetic tractive force is achieved with the lowest possible coil consumption.

Optimal design of the magnetic coils and magnetic field-proof construction are important aspects in energy feed-in. But there is much greater savings potential in operation: thanks to the optimal actuation of the brakes with a special ROBA-switch rectifier, up to 93 percent of energy can be saved.

Climate neutral since 2020

The mechanical engineering company has compensated the emissions that still arise by purchasing climate protection certificates for 2020 and 2021. The company is supporting three projects with these certificates: one in India for generating electricity from biomass residues, one in China (distribution of efficient solar cookers to rural households) and one in Turkey to generate renewable energy through wind power.

Mayr Antriebstechnik has received the award "climate neutral company" for its compensation of greenhouse gases. As a result, the company claims to be one of the first in its sector that voluntarily compensates for its emissions under the Kyoto Protocol.
