The Dutch telecommunications company KPN has postponed the switch-off of its 2G network by two years. The new date is 1 December 2027.
KPN wants to give consumers and companies more time to transfer from 2G to the new 4G and 5G technologies, the company announced in mid-December 2024 in a press release.
The number of 2G users had greatly declined in recent years but there was still a relatively large group of active users. These included for example the operators of lifts whose bidirectional emergency call systems ran on 2G connections.
KPN intended to give the market another two years for the conversion. Originally, the 2G network was to have been shut down by 1 December 2025. The new date was now 1 December 2027. The use of 3G had already no longer been possible since 31 March 2022.
At the competitor Vodafone Ziggo, there is no change. Its 2G network would remain available until at least the end of 2026 our editorial staff was told. The 3G network had already been switched off in 2020.
At Odido, the third mobile communications network operator in the Netherlands, 2G had no longer been available since June 2023. The company specified 1 August 2026 as the specific date for the switch-off of its 3G network.
