First “notified body” for Machine Directive

News

TÜV Süd has been recognised and listed as the worldwide first notified body on the European NANDO website for the new Machine Regulation.

As a result, the testing organisation is also entitled to carry out the special conformity assessment procedures for lifts and hoisting equipment.

"We are proud to make an important contribution as notified body to the implementation of the Regulation and to the safety of machines in the European Union," declared Tobias Pfeiffer, Department Head of Industry and Energy Products at the TÜV Süd Product Service GmbH in a press release.

As a notified body (NB 0123), the testing organisation would assume "a key role" in the implementation of the Machine Regulation by supporting manufacturers and other economic players in the implementation of the new requirements, testing and certification as the basis for the distribution of their products.

Machine Regulation

The EU Regulation 2023/1230 on machinery replaces the Machine Directive 2006/42/EC (see the article "New Machine Regulation: the most important facts and changes" in issue 6/2023 of the LIFTjournal).

The Machine Regulation introduces many new and revised requirements for the manufacturers of lifts and lifting equipment too. They will have to adapt their products and procedures by 20 January 2027 to the then applicable legal requirements. This also includes technologies such as machine learning (e.g. artificial intelligence) and cybersecurity.

NANDO: The abbreviation NANDO stands for "New Approach Notified and Designated Organisations". Information about the bodies and their contact and notification data are available online on the pages of the European Commission.
