Publication of EN ISO 8100-1/2 postponed

News

The publication of EN ISO 8100-1/2 has been postponed until December 2025. This is one of the main news items to come out of the 41st plenary meeting of the CEN/TC 10. More than 40 delegates attended the meeting.

A plenary meeting is a forum where every convenor of CEN/TC 10 work groups presents the ongoing work and its progress to be evaluated, and decisions such as the launch of a new standardization work or revision of the existing standards are taken.

The main items of this year were regulatory issues in Europe, such as the citation of the harmonised standards in the Official Journal of the European Union or the impact of the new Machinery Regulation and Cyber Resilience Act for the standardization of lifts and escalators.

Esfandiar Gharibaan, the Chairman of CEN/TC 10, and Eva Contival, the secretary of CEN/TC 10, welcomed more than 40 delegates from the European National Standardization Bodies (NSBs) as well as observers from European Commission and other stakeholders who attended the meeting on 20-21 November in Rome.

He thanked the delegates and thanked the European Federation for Elevator Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (EFESME) and the Italian Association of Lifts Manufacturing and Maintenance Companies (Anacam) for their support and hosting the meeting and the dinner.

The chairman provided a report on the status of the CEN/TC 10. Currently, globally more than one million new lifts (135,000 units in Europe) are placed on the market each year, and there are nearly 23 million lifts (seven million in Europe) in operation. There is a strong trend for aligning standards around the world and a move towards ISO standards whenever possible.

Important trend: digitisation

Several of the CEN/TC 10 standards have become ISO standards. For example, EN 81-20/50:2014 has been adopted by ISO as ISO 8100-1/2:2019. Also, CEN has adopted several ISO standards as EN ISO standards, for example the EN ISO 25745 series of standards.

Another important trend is about digitalization. The very first standard for lifts in this field is ISO 8102-20 for cybersecurity of lifts and escalators. The chairman also gave a summary review of the current work program of CEN/TC 10.

Dr Frauke Hoss, from the EU Commission, provided a comprehensive overview of the regulatory changes in Europe, especially on the Cyber Resilience Act and the Standardization Request for Machinery Regulation expected to be adopted soon. This will define the conditions and timetable for the revision and citation of the harmonised standards under the Machinery Regulation.

Standards complete and free of any errors

Currently, EN ISO 8100-1/2 is the main project consuming much of the resources in CEN/TC 10. René Hermann, convenor of WG1, presented a comprehensive review of the status of the project and its timetable. CEN and ISO are taking all possible steps to ensure that these standards are complete and free of any errors. The publication of these standards has been postponed and are now scheduled to be released in December 2025.

This project is the biggest one ever undertaken by CEN/TC 10, which will result in a truly global standard for the safety of lifts. More than 67 countries, CEN and ISO members, have a direct interest in these standards.

Every convenor provided the overview of the relevant working group, followed by discussions and questions and answers by the delegates. The meeting was followed by the presentation on the status of ISO/TC 178, made by Prof Dr Gero Gschwendtner, the chairman of ISO/TC 178. He also gave summary review of the work program of ISO/TC 178.

Stephan Störmer, Convenvor of the European coordination of Notified Bodies for Lifts (NB-L), outlined the current status and work being carried out by working groups within NB-L.

The next meeting of CEN/TC 10 plenary is to be in London on 19-20 November 2025.

The author is the chairman of CEN/TC 10, the Technical Committee in the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), responsible for developing and maintaining European standards for lifts, escalators and moving walks.
