Otis has opened a new circuit board factory in Berlin for which it invested eight million euros. Judy Marks, Chair, CEO and President of the international group, travelled there to attend the official opening.
Otis has developed know-how in the development, production and equipping of circuit boards for over four decades in Germany. This was a segment of growing strategic importance for numerous sectors, according to the company. The circuit boards "Made in Berlin" are used worldwide in lifts and escalators – including in Burj Khalifa in Dubai and in the Otis escalators of the London Tube Elizabeth line.
The investment in the state-of-the-art production facility amounted to eight million euros. The focus was on developing complex circuit board designs, rapid prototyping and the industrialisation of prototypes for serial production, such as the new generation of digitally networked Gen360 lifts.
"The Berlin location stands for a fantastic innovation culture and advanced technologies," stressed Otis Chair, CEO & President Judy Marks at the opening ceremony. "The components we develop here permit customers around the world to configure the intelligent, networked and sustainable cities of tomorrow."
The new circuit board production is part of the Otis factory SSI Electronics Berlin in which over 180 employees also produce drive packages and complete controllers for lifts along with circuit boards. About 75 percent of the products manufactured in Berlin are intended for construction projects in Europe and for the modernisation market. The remaining 25 percent are exported.
In addition, the product range at SSI Electronics Berlin includes support in the planning and development of major projects, such as the current modernisation of 30 lifts in the centre at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin.
During her visit to the German capital, Judy Marks also visited the well-known architectural ensemble in which Otis technology has transported residents and visitors since the late 1990s. The district is currently undergoing comprehensive redesign by the owners Oxford Properties Group and Norges Bank Investment Management.
Otis is the world market leader in the manufacture, installation and maintenance of lifts and escalators.
